Kuala Lumpur is one of Asia's most underrated family cities. English is widespread, food is spectacular and cheap, malls are air-conditioned refuges from the heat, and the Petronas Twin Towers still knock kids sideways. It's also an ideal launchpad into Langkawi, Borneo, or the Cameron Highlands — meaning KL often becomes a "48 hours before we hit the beach" city, and that turns out to be exactly the right dose. Base in Bukit Bintang or KLCC. Do the Petronas Towers Skybridge (book online in advance — it sells out), a hawker dinner at Jalan Alor, KL Bird Park (one of the world's largest walk-in aviaries), and the Batu Caves at the edge of the city — 272 rainbow-painted steps and rhesus macaques will keep any kid engaged. Traffic is real; use Grab and the LRT/monorail.
