Istanbul is a city on two continents, a food capital that flies under the global radar, and an unexpectedly excellent family destination. Old-town Sultanahmet packs three of the world's great landmarks (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi) into walking distance. Cross the Golden Horn to Beyoğlu and Karaköy for the modern city — trams, hip cafés, sunset views back at the peninsula. Add a ferry across the Bosphorus (the best-value cruise on earth), a whirl through the Grand Bazaar, and enough kebab, meze and baklava to reconsider your life. Base in Sultanahmet if you want to walk out of the hotel into the Blue Mosque's call to prayer, or Beyoğlu / Karaköy if you want a livelier, more local feel with kids. Modest dress at the mosques (covered shoulders/knees; scarves at the door for anyone who identifies as female). Bosphorus ferries are a great way to break up a hot afternoon.
